MARIA FERNANDA PALMA PEREIRA

Personal

MARIA FERNANDA PALMA PEREIRA was born on 3 March 1955. She is married and has a daughter.

She graduated from Law School and took her Masters, PhD and Aggregation in Legal Sciences at that same Faculty of the University of Lisbon where she has been teaching since 1997. She is currently Full Teacher and heads the Criminal Sciences area. She is the President of the Institut for Criminal Law and Criminal Sciences.

She was a researcher at the Munich University in 1983-1984 under the supervision of Claus Roxin, and at Max-Planck Institute for Criminal Law in Freiburg in 1988.

HHer writings include articles and books such as “The difference between dolus eventualis and negligence”, “Legitimate defence justification as a problem of the boundaries of rights”, “The principle of excuse in Criminal Law”, “Criminal Constitutional Law” and “Impossible Criminal Attempt”.

She gave Conferences and courses in several Universities on Criminal Law, Constitutional Law and Philosophy of Law.

She was a Constitutional Court Judge from 1994 to 2007 elected to that position by the Portuguese Parliament.

She was appointed as Expert in Environmental Criminal Law at the United Nations in 1994 and 1995.

She was a member of the Board of the Portuguese Philosophy Society in 1995 and 1996.

She was conferred the honour of “Grand Official of the Order of Prince Henry”, by the President of the Republic , in 1995.

She received the Municipal Merit Gold Medal, in 1997, conferred by the Oeiras Municipality.

Besides her academic activities she is currently representative of Portugal at the European Commission for Democracy through Law (Venice Commission).
