Electoral disputes resolution - Workshop in Skopje

Skopje – An expert of the Venice Commission participates in several meetings in the electoral field in Skopje from 30 May to 1 June. The meetings are taking place in the framework of a workshop organised by the State Election Commission in cooperation with the Venice Commission, the OSCE and the IFES. The workshop is partially financed by the "Horizontal Facility for the Western Balkans and Turkey", a Joint Programme funded by the European Union and the Council of Europe and implemented by the Council of Europe.

This workshop on electoral dispute resolution is aimed at fostering inter-institutional cooperation. The expert of the Venice Commission will share with the participants her experience on a number of issues such as the complaints mechanism and international standards in the electoral field.

 What standards?


During the current Covid-19 pandemic, national governments are taking exceptional measures to slow down the spread of the virus. On numerous occasions, the Venice Commission examined the limits of such emergency powers. The Commission has consistently underlined that State security and public safety can only be effectively guaranteed in a democracy which fully respects the rule of law. Even in genuine cases of emergency situations, the rule of law must prevail.
