GLOBAL FORUM ON DEMOCRACY - The role of Electoral Bodies in democratic governance

24/11/2021 - 25/11/2021

Mexico City – A representative of the Venice Commission participated in the Global Forum on Democracy on Electoral Management Bodies organised by the National Electoral Institute of Mexico on 24-25 November 2021 in Mexico City.

The Forum was organised with the support and cooperation of Kofi Annan Foundation, International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES), Inter-American Institute of Human Rights (IIDH), International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (IDEA International), the Venice Commission of the Council of Europe and the Organization of American States.

The purpose of the Forum is to analyse and discuss some of the main problems and challenges that democracy has during the first decades of the twenty-first century.

Electoral management bodies have an essential role to play in this regard. Impartiality in their performance, the specific characteristics of their professional profile, the separation from political formations and other power groups that contribute to giving a new approach to the formation of the liberal democratic State with the creation of autonomous electoral bodies.

The Commission's participation was funded through the joint EU-Council of Europe project “Support to reforms of electoral legislation and practice and regional Human Rights instruments and mechanisms in countries of Latin America, Central Asia and Mongolia”, funded by the European Union and implemented by the Venice Commission.
