Tunisia - Adoption of the new Constitution - Statement by the President of the Venice Commission

31/01/2014

Tunisia has a democratic Constitution since Monday, 27 January 2014!

This well drafted text, adopted by the National Constituent Assembly with an overwhelming majority, bears witness to the Tunisian people’s ability to be united faced with the challenge of building, in the near future, a modern country with democratic institutions and where all the political forces, the civil society, the men and women of all ages, in particular young people, have their dignity and their role.

The Venice Commission welcomes this accomplishment.

Following the fruitful discussions on the Constitution, the Commission is at the disposal of the National Constituent Assembly for the implementation of the Constitution, in particular in the preparation of the electoral law, according to the timetable laid down in the Constitution and respecting the legitimate expectations of the Tunisian people.

Gianni BUQUICCHIO,
President of the Venice Commission
