TUNISIA - The President of the Venice Commission meets with the President of the Republic H.E. Kaïs Saïed

TUNIS - The President of the Venice Commission, Ms Claire Bazy Malaurie, met today, Friday 1 April, the Tunisian President, H.E. Kaïs Saïed.

After the last months of the exercise of power by the Tunisian President in the absence of a clear constitutional framework, having led on 30 March to the dissolution of parliament until that date "frozen", and the opening of a judicial investigation against certain deputies who took part in a virtual session of parliament on the same day, the President of the Venice Commission wished to discuss with the President the modalities for the return to a constitutional regime and the preparation of the reform of the constitution, the referendum announced for 25 July 2022 as well as the elections, scheduled for 17 December 2022.

The President of the Venice Commission reaffirmed that the Venice Commission is ready to place its expertise at the service of the Tunisian people and to support the implementation of democratic reforms with respect for the rule of law and human rights.

During her visit to Tunis, the President, accompanied by the Secretary of the Venice Commission, Ms Simona Granata-Menghini, and the Co-ordinator of Neighborhood Policy with the Southern Mediterranean and Head of the Council of Europe Office in Tunis, Ms Pilar Morales Fernández-Shaw, also met the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Migration and Tunisians Abroad Mr Othman Jerandi and the Minister of State Property and Land Affairs Mr Mohamed Rékik.

They also held meetings with the Attorney General Mr Imed Dérouiche and senior officials of the Ministry of Justice, with the Directors General within the Presidency of the Government in charge of international cooperation, independent bodies, relations with the civil society and political parties, and human rights, as well as with representatives of civil society and several members of the diplomatic community in Tunis.
