Budapest/online – the National Electoral Institute of Mexico (INE Mexico) in cooperation with different international organisations, electoral associations and electoral bodies currently hold the Global Summit for Democracy 2022. The aim of the initiative is to develop a global process for the debate and proposals on the great challenges democratic regimes face nowadays, in particular, those related to free and fair elections.
The Association of European Election Officials (ACEEEO) was called upon to organise the European Regional Forum of the Summit. However, following the armed aggression on behalf of Russia and Belarus, members of the ACEEEO decided to dissolve the organisation. The Regional Forum was therefore organised by the former Secretariat of the ACEEEO.
The Regional Forum accommodated discussions between electoral experts on such timely topics as:
• the relevance of civic education,
• the threat of populism,
• the relationship of freedom of expression and digital platforms and
• integrity of electoral legislation.
Mr Pierre Garrone, Secretary of the Council for Democratic Elections (Venice Commission), intervened in the Regional topical session on “Integrity of elections and electoral legislation in Europe”.
This Forum provided an opportunity for electoral stakeholders from Europe to gather and discuss the possibilities of institutionalised cooperation between European EMBs and election officials.
