GEORGIA – the Urgent Opinion on the draft law amending procedure for the use of covert investigative measures issued

Strasbourg, Council of Europe – Today the Venice Commission issued its Urgent Opinion on Georgia’s the draft law amending procedure for the use of covert investigative measures.

The draft law was adopted by the Parliament on 7 June 2022 and subsequently vetoed by the President of Georgia, whose administration requested an urgent opinion from the Venice Commission on 1 July 2022.

The Commission concluded that the draft surveillance law was adopted hastily and needs further elaboration.

The Urgent Opinion will be submitted for endorsement by the forthcoming plenary session of the Commission (Venice, 21-22 October 2022).

The opinion was prepared under the Quick response Mechanism in the framework of the EU/CoE joint programme Partnership for Good Governance, co-funded by the Council of Europe and the European Union and implemented by the Council of Europe.
